Whilst we recognise that academic excellence is important to strive for, Sixth Form life at Chellaston Academy is so much more than just lessons in the classroom.
Student Leadership
There are a wide variety of student leadership opportunities for our students, including Head and Deputy Head Boy and Girl positions as well as academic, house and wellbeing prefects. These positions are highly sought after as they look to drive positive change within the school. There is also a school council which Sixth Form representatives often lead.
Our Sixth Form students also support the Academy by offering peer to peer support for our lower years and are involved in paired reading with younger students who need additional support. They also act as mentors in certain subjects for our Year 11 students.
The House System
Every student will be placed in one of our 5 Academy Houses; Alport, Eldon, Kinder, Stanage and Thorpe. There will be numerous house events through the course of the students’ time at Chellaston that they can get involved in. These events contribute to the overall House Cup awarded at the end of the year and support house charities.
Extra Curriculum
Sport, music and drama all play an important role at our Academy and there are opportunities for all students to be involved in sports teams, music concerts and drama productions throughout the year. Sixth Formers also have access to the school gym at designated times. We are also very lucky to have a number of residential trips within and outside of the UK to support the curriculum. In the last few years we have had trips to China, Uganda, Poland, Cern and New York. Students will also be able to continue with their Duke of Edinburgh qualification or get involved in Sixth Form Debating.
Professional Working Lunches
We are currently developing close links with local businesses and Chellaston Sixth Form alumni, who will be facilitating remote “working lunches” for our students. These sessions, open to both Year 12 and 13, will provide insight into what certain careers look like, as well as introducing students to what personal skills are required in order to be successful and will provide advice and guidance for students who are interested in pursuing careers in certain fields.
These sessions are driven through student voice to identify what areas our students want to know more about, however if you feel your business could offer our students a working lunch to spark their interest, please email us to let us know.
PSHE and Student Development
Part of our vision for Chellaston Sixth Form is that students leave us as well rounded young adults, ready to face the challenges of modern day life. To support that we have a full Personal, Social and Health Education programme delivered predominantly by tutors. This includes aspects of paying bills, getting a mortgage or credit card as well as first aid, safe driving and age appropriate relationships.
